There are two forms of membership, one is for individuals and the other is for groups such as churches and associations (website), which allow for a range of involvement within the SNU. The associate level of membership is for individuals who are not members to any Spiritualist Church, but want to be affiliated with the SNU. Associate members are able to attend meetings, but they are not allowed to vote. Another level of membership is the Spiritualist Church Membership which gives membership to churches that are affiliated with the SNU. They are able to benefit from SNU offerings such as training, legal protection, and insurance. The Church Membership gives some level of freedom, but they do have to abide by basic parameters set forth by the SNU, such as the seven principles. Overseas, membership is for individuals and organizations outside of the UK who want to be affiliated with the SNU. They are not able to vote in the AGM, but they are able to access publications and events. A Life membership is given when there is a one time payment to the SNU; The Life Member is able to benefit from all its offerings for life. The two forms of membership give access to SNU for individuals and churches.
The individual level of membership is beneficial for Spiritualists at any point in their journey. The individual member of the SNU can vote at the AGM and could become elected to serve on the NEC. The benefits include a voice to add to the community, attend, speak, and vote at the District and National meetings. Members are better able to keep up to date with the movement, take SNU courses at a discounted rate, and become active within the District and national committees. Additionally, members are able to seek advice and support from the SNU about Spiritualism and receive circulations, such as SNU Today. The SNU member is able to access listings of Spiritualist churches and services. The SNU membership at the individual level can offer a sense of community, financial support, access to resources, legal services and advice. Individual membership is important because it gives those people a sense of connectedness to a greater body (p92).
